Manatee County Historical Records Library Wins Beautification Award

September 26, 2006- Keep Manatee Beautiful recently awarded the Manatee County Historical Records Library with an award for the beautification of a public building. The landscaping design by John Moody and Associates and installed by Mike Armstrong Landscaping completes a five year project during which the building was restored and the grounds enhanced. The Historical Records Library is housed in a 1918 building which was formerly the public library for the City of Bradenton and later, Manatee County. It was built with funds from the Carnegie Foundation, a philanthropic organization established by industrialist Andrew Carnegie in the late nineteen century. Carnegie donated more than $40 million dollars to build 1,679 new library buildings all across America. Two of those libraries are in Manatee County, one in Palmetto and one in Bradenton. The Bradenton library houses the Manatee County Historical Records Library, a historical archive established in 1978 by R.B. "Chips" Shore, Manatee County Clerk of Circuit Court and Comptroller. The building, still owned by the City of Bradenton, is leased to the Manatee County Clerk of Circuit Court. There, Manatee County's early governmental records, dating back to the county's formation in 1855, are kept. Documents such as marriage licenses, deed books, probate files, tax records and historic maps can be used by researchers. The Manatee County Historical Records Library is located at 1405 4th Avenue West, Bradenton. Hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. For more information about the Manatee County Historical Records Library, call (941) 741-4070.
