Open free to the public, the Manatee
County Historical Records Library was the first
county archival library of its kind in the state
of Florida. Located at 1405
4th Avenue West in Bradenton, the Historical
Records Library houses resources that are available
to anyone seeking information on early Manatee
County and its residents. The Historical Records
Library is housed within the 1918 Carnegie Library
building, which was placed on the U.S. Department
of the Interior's Registry of Historic Sites
in 1987. This building is leased from the City
of Bradenton.
LIBRARY GUIDE
Manatee County was organized in
1855. At that time, it was as large as the state
of Connecticut and extended 5,000 square miles.
It contained what are now Sarasota, Hardee, DeSoto,
Highlands, Charlotte, and Glades counties. All
but Sarasota County were split off on May 9,
1887 when DeSoto County was created. Sarasota
County was established on May 14, 1921. The Historical
Records Library has records of those counties
from 1856 until they were established.
