Historical Organizations
in Manatee County
Back
to Historical Records Library
Over a dozen different historical organizations
exist in Manatee County. These range from community based groups
such as the Palmetto Historical Commission and the Cortez Historical
Society to nationally chartered clubs such as the United Daughters
of the Confederacy. Whether through monthly meetings and lectures,
scholarship awards, the establishment and maintenance of historical
parks or museums or many other types of historical activities,
the members of these groups work hard to ensure that the history
of their area or field of interest is preserved.
In the Fall and Spring of each year, all of these
groups, along with others who are not traditionally associated
with historic preservation, join their efforts to make two very
special events take place. The Fall event, Manatee County History
Fair, was held November 15-16 at the Bradenton Auditorium. While
History Fair, a historical research contest for Manatee County
students grades 4-12, is sponsored by the Manatee County Historical
Society and the Manatee County Historical Commission, many different
historical groups also sponsor prizes and send volunteers to serve
as judges. The Spring event, Manatee Heritage Days, is held on
March 1-31. Organized by the Manatee Heritage Association, Heritage
Days is a month long celebration of our county's history. Many
different activities from boat and train trips and bicycle and
walking tours to open houses and craft fairs take place throughout
the county.
All of these organizations rely on volunteers and
need help with these two particular events as well as the many
others that the individual groups sponsor during the year. The
only requirement to serve with a historical organization is a
love of history. For more information about Manatee County History
Fair or Manatee Heritage Days or to find out how to contact the
