The Voyage...
Come aboard as we undertake a voyage in
time and tradition. Our port of call is somewhere in
the past but the harbor is a modern museum facility
housed in the restored historic 1912 Schoolhouse located
on the park-like grounds of Cortez Nature Preserve.
Here you will find, displayed for your delight, pieces
of the almost forgotten past. Here will be tales of
Indians, explorers, pioneers, fishermen, smugglers,
pirates, exotic aquatic wildlife and more from the sun
drenched shore land that stretches from Cedar Key to
Key West.
The Voyage begins in the historic fishing village of
Cortez, but in time it will travel as far beyond as
there are years and sea miles into the past. You must
sign on to make the Voyage possible. We have to build
this harbor and our ship.
The Crew...
Florida Maritime Museum is
a joint effort of Manatee County Government, Manatee
County Clerk of Circuit Court, Florida Institute for
Saltwater Heritage (F.I.S.H.), the Cortez Village Historical
Society, the people of Cortez, the residents of Manatee
County, and YOU.
The sailors rule for survival in
a gale at sea is that you give one hand for the
ship and one hand for yourself, so become a Volunteer
crewmember and give us a hand. Our crew is what keeps
this vessel underway. Come help build boats, do research
about maritime history, teach classes, give tours, assist
with restoration of the 1912 Schoolhouse and more. Contact
us for information.
